However, this doesn't guarantee that pregnant women are often free from the threat of mirror syndrome.
Symptoms of Mirror Syndrome
Medically, mirror syndrome is thought as Ballantyne syndrome or triple edema. The reason this syndrome is called the "mirror" syndrome is because the symptoms in the fetus and the mother have in common, namely both experiencing swelling. The body of the fetus experiences swelling due to excess fluid, and at the same time, the body of the pregnant woman also swells due to preeclampsia. In general, the symptoms experienced by pregnant women with mirror syndrome are very similar to the symptoms of preeclampsia, namely:
- High blood pressure.
- Excessive weight gain in a short time.

In this condition, also found an increase in blood plasma levels, while the number of red blood cells decreased. This makes the blood thinner. This condition, known as hemodilution, can only be detected if pregnant women perform blood tests.
Causes and Treatment of Mirror Syndrome
The cause of mirror syndrome is still not known with certainty. However, this condition is usually associated with hydrops fetalis, which is a condition in which the fetus experiences excess body fluids, such as under the skin, stomach, and around the heart and lungs. When hydrops fetalis causes preeclampsia, mirror syndrome occurs.
Hydrops fetalis itself can be caused by various things, such as genetic and heart problems, metabolic disorders, anemia, or infections. In addition, hydrops fetalis can also be caused by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) which attacks pregnant women with twins. In this condition, identical twins must share blood flow from one placenta, so the blood flow between the two fetuses is not the same. One fetus becomes deficient in blood supply, while the other has excess.

Treatment of mirror syndrome varies widely, depending on the cause of hydrops fetalis and the severity of preeclampsia in the pregnant woman. The sooner the triggering factor for hydrops fetalis is identified, the greater the chance for the fetus to survive. If the preeclampsia experienced by pregnant women is very serious, then early delivery may be carried out to save the mother's life. After birth, the baby will be treated in the NICU for further treatment.
For those of you who are pregnant, it is important to undergo regular prenatal checkups, ultrasound, urine tests, and blood tests to determine the health condition of you and your fetus. If you experience complaints during pregnancy, do not hesitate to consult a gynecologist.
