Things to Pay Attention to during the First Trimester
There are several important things you need to do to keep your pregnancy in the first trimester healthy. Here are some things you need to do in the first trimester of pregnancy:
1. Choose a gynecologist
If you have been pregnant before, you may already have a suitable obstetrician or midwife. But if it's your first time pregnant, it's time for you to find out which obstetrician or midwife is the most suitable for you. You can ask family or friends who have been pregnant or find out on the internet.
Make sure you choose a doctor or midwife who already has an official practice permit, can make you comfortable, and supports the birth plan you want. Consulting a gynecologist is very important, especially if you have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or a history of complications in previous pregnancies.
2. Take vitamins for pregnant women
When planning a pregnancy, women are generally advised to take vitamins to prepare for a healthy fetus. If you haven't done it yet, it's never too late. Do it right now. Vitamins that are very important to be consumed by pregnant women and expectant mothers are vitamins that contain folic acid, iron, and calcium. These nutrients can reduce the risk of your baby having birth defects, such as spina bifida, cleft lip, or heart defects.
3. Stay away from cigarette smoke
If before pregnancy you liked smoking, it is advisable to immediately stop this bad habit. Toxic substances in cigarettes can increase the risk of placental disorders, premature births, fetal growth retardation, miscarriage, birth defects, or fetal death in the womb. In addition do not smoking, and you need to avoid cigarette smoke from people who smoke around you too.
4. Consumption of balanced nutritious food
This is a mandatory rule that you must fulfill while pregnant. A balanced nutritious diet consisting of carbohydrates, protein, fat, as well as vitamins and minerals can help the early process of forming the fetus to grow healthy. Some examples of foods that you can eat while pregnant are vegetables, nuts, whole grains (wheat bread, brown rice), and protein foods (eggs, lean meats, fish, milk and processed products). You are advised to avoid raw, undercooked, or unpasteurized products. And remember to stay away from alcoholic beverages and limit caffeinated drinks. Do not consume more than 200 mg of caffeine or the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee per day.
5. Drink lots of water
It is very important to maintain adequate body fluids during pregnancy to prevent dehydration. You are advised to drink about 2 liters of water every day. But if you do strenuous activities, drink some more water. To find out if your body has been getting enough water intake, just look at the color of your urine. If it is pale yellow or clear, then your body has been getting enough fluids.
6. Go to bed early
Getting pregnant early may make you feel more tired than usual. This is one of the most common complaints during pregnant. So, you are advised to get more rest. One way is to go to bed early. During this period of pregnancy, you may still feel comfortable sleeping on your back. A health study on pregnant women shows that pregnant women who sleep less than 6 hours per day are more at risk of experiencing various problems in pregnancy and complications in childbirth. Therefore, pregnant women are advised to get enough sleep ideally, which is for 7-9 hours every night.
7. Stay away from activities that endanger pregnancy
There are several activities or homework that pose a risk to your current condition. Examples are cleaning pet feces, moving or lifting heavy furniture, cleaning the house with chemical cleaning products, and spraying the room with insect repellent.
Even though it looks like a lot to be done, don't make the things above a burden that makes you stressed or afraid, okay? Pregnant women are forbidden to stress. So, take it easy and enjoy every moment that happens during your first trimester. In addition, don't forget to undergo regular pregnancy check-ups to the obstetrician to monitor your condition and that of your fetus.
